Valley "De Höll"

Nachtigallental | Nightingale Valley

The Nightingale Valley is just wonderful, in very season of the  year. When you are in downtown Königswinter,  walk up Bahnhofsstraße and you are there .. and from the first moment onwards you feel like in another, merry world.

NachtiVogel.gif (10975 Byte)A legend from the Middle Ages says that St. Bernard of Clairveaux, while visiting the Monastery of Himmerod, got very upset over the singing of the nightingales. He had scolded and nagged until the birds had left. They emigrated into a valley in the Seven Mountains, which has been named "Nightingale Valley" after them.  St. Bernard went back to Clairveaux - music has been at home here ever since. The Nightingale Valley is a paradise for birds. A momument reminds us of Willi Ostermann, a Rhenish singer, composer and text writer.

When I was a kid, I often played there. In the summer we took a path from the Nightingale Valley to go to the swimming pool on the hills, the Lemmerzbad, in the winter we brought our bob sleighs. We especially enjoyed riding them through another pass that goes parallel to the Nightingale Valley called "Dr Höll", "the Hell" .. just have a look at the rock faces!
