Liba of Ölberg

Siebengebirge tales, Liba of Ölberg
Medieval castle wall

A traditional legend from the Middle Ages in the Siebengebirge. Liba of Ölberg and her love Werner g0t caught between the political fronts.

Back then, Kunibert, the Lord of Ölberg, fought with the Archbishop of Cologne, Engelbert, over predominance in the Siebengebirge.

But Liba, his beautiful young daughter, was in love with Werner, the Archbishop’s nephew. Werner convinced his uncle to make the first step to end the feud. Engelbert offered peace to the Lord of Ölberg, but just earned scorn and derision.

But the worst was yet to come. Kunibert made a malignant plan. He gathered a few degenerated knights around him, they lay in wait for the Archbishop and murdered him.

This crime shocked and outraged the other knights. Therefore, they decided to punish Kunibert and his murderous companions. Together they moved towards the Ölberg and set the castle on fire. Liba died in her father’s arms, and Werner, full of despair, became a monk.

To sum up the tale of Liba of Ölberg, I’d like to mention a historical event. the murder of Engelbert I, Archbishop of Cologne, on November 7, 1225. However, there was no medieval castle on the Ölberg.
